network problem

By Shanghai Sam ·
I have 2 computers that are being networked up. Both are XP. I am using a wireless netgear router. I have set the network up. I will receive a signal and will be able to use the internet, but after 10 mins, the connection will be "unavailable". The computer with the router is in the basement, and the computer receiving the connection is upstairs. When I get a connection, it says that the signal is strong. What is wrong? thanks

From what i understand, you are using an ethernet cable(CAT 5), to connect the machine upstairs to the router in the basement. If my assumption is correct, then the problem is that you have exceeded the maximum length of the ethernet cable. The maximum length is 100 meters, about 300 feet. So i would suggest you putting the router somewhere in between the 2 computers to act as a repeater, to extend the possible distance.
