Network Problem with Windows 98

By fizzycat2001 ·
A friend did a defragment recently and now cannot serve the net. He can dial into his service provider but he cannot get to any server. Tried ping and trace route, doesn't seems to be able get out of his system. But he is connected to the modem ofhis ISP. Checked all the network configuration and everything is in order. Could some advice what other areas I can check to see if there is a corruption in the network or a driver is missing. Thanks.

Sometimes Win98 needs the TCP/IP stack reset:- Goto control panel Network and remove all the protocols you have in there (write down any settings you have first).

Reboot and then use the same option to add back TCP/IP and any other protocols youhave installed.

It may be a long shot or perhaps You already did it but anyway you can try this:

1. Click the Start button.
2. Click on Settings.
3. Click on Control Panel.
4. Double-click on Add/Remove Programs.
5. Click on the Windows Setup tab, and remove the check next to
Communications.
6. Click on OK and then Click on Apply and then OK.
7. When Windows asks you if you would like to restart your system, click
on No.
8. Your Control Panel should remain open.
9. Double-click on Add/RemovePrograms.
10. Click on the Windows Setup tab, and place a check next to
Communications.
11. Click on OK and then Click on Apply and then OK.
12. Windows will copy files to the hard drive. If you are prompted that
an older file exists, click on No.
13. In a few moments you will be prompted to Restart Your Computer.
Click on Yes.

well, it's not quite sure what is you are use, dial up with gateway installed or not.
But anyway,
try ping your local isp IP, or your dns from the ISP. If you can ping it, the problem is the isp.
If you cannot , try to uninstall the tcp ip, set it again, set the dial up networking again, and set the dns to your isp's and try to connect again.
If still can't try to remove all the tcp ip seting, then restart then configure it again from strach.

Mulianto

You could also try updating the version of Dial Up Networking. Check on the microsoft website: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q297/8/16.ASP

(As usual, remove any spaces or %20 in the URL).

Hope this helps,
Gary
