Network Problems

By bowsh007 ·
I need some expert help on this one. I have a client who recently could not access their boss's shared folder. There are 5 machines on the workgroup, but the 2 that are having trouble communicating are win xp home SP2 and win xp pro SP2. So, here is the symptom...on the xp pro machine in my network places all of the shares show up as blank icons. On all the other machines the shares show up fine, but no one can access them on the xp pro machine. They receive a "network path was not found" error. Here is what I have done so far and have not been successful. I started out by running the command to make sure that tcp port 445 was open for communication....and of course that didnt fix it. Then I thought well it could be a permissions issue so i temporarily allowed full control to luck. So, I thought it could be a virus or spyware so i ran the proper scans on both machines in question and did remove a couple infections on both machines, but the two machines still wouldn't communicate. So, I thought maybe there are some system files corrupted and I ran sfc on both machines in question and it did repair some files, but still no shares would work. I am in dyer need of assistance with this one it honestly has me stumped.

Can you Ping the other machines?
Do you have "Clients for Microsoft Networks" and "File and Printer Sharing" installed?
Has the Firewall or Anti-Virus begun blocking communication?
