Network problems in a Netware/NT environ

By jeep4jb ·
We seem to be experiencing problems on our network where we run IPX and IP. For example, I've noticed that NT login scripts run very slow on Win98 machines but fly through on Win95 machines. We are running Netware 4.11 and NT. I've noticed that NT login scripts fly on Win98 until I load the Novell client. Unfortunately, we cannot get away from IPX just yet. Any thoughts on why this is occuring? Thanks!

Network problems in a Netware/NT environ

I'd point my finger at a misconfigured client first, wrong preferred protocol, or something, but I'd suggest that you start by verifing that the servers are set up correctly from NDSes perspective.

It sounds like you are converting a netware IPX environment to a Netware IP environment. To do that you'll need a gateway box. Make sure that the gateway box isn't on the far side of a WAN link. Also, make sure that the clients have a replica of their partition that is locally accessable. Otherwise everything will take forever, not just logging in. Personally, I found that having a copy of every partition all the way back to root was neccessary, but Novell would disagree with my experiences.

NT has a problem figuring out which type ofnetwork it is talking to sometimes. If you search support.novell.com you'll find several suggestions that should help solve problems with NT's MUP.SYS file.

If it's correctly configured, your Netware box should (and will) SLAUGHTER an NT box speed-wise.

Kev.

The problem referenced is one where login scripts fly on Windows 95 and run unaccetably slow on Windows 98. I pointed out that it is a Novell/NT environment because I believe this plays a role in the problem. This answer does not provide a resolution for this.

Need more information -
Do the NetWare Servers have multiple NIC cards?

Do the Windows 98 PC's have auto-frame type selected for the IPX protocol?

Are the NT servers running NWLink (IPX), TCPIP or both

Do the NT servers have Gateway services for NetWare or NDS for NT??

Netware 4.11 servers have a single NIC. The 98 PCs do have auto frame selected for IPX. The NT servers are running both protocols and have GSNW installed. I've also found that if I use an older version of the Novell client (such as 2.2), the login scripts run fine. However, if I use the newer Novell client (like 3.3), the problem resurfaces causing the NT login scripts to take forever. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

Have a look at the MAX CACHE SIZE setting under the advanced tab on the Client32 settings. If this is set to zero, it can allocate up to 50% of the avaiable RAM for Caching. Set the setting to 1024. You shoudl notice a substantial difference in the speed of processing.

Have a look at Document 2909911 on the Novell Support site.
