network setup

By jenn17 ·
I have to setup a network that is running W2k with a just a printer, a mac and a dsl line. I need some quick tips for this network that is being moved. Things to check after the move. I didn't originally setup this network, but will be responsible for it after the move.

does your network only consist of one w2k, one printer and one mac?

if so, make sure both the win2k and mac are able to communicate. protocols (appletalk), and unless you have a router, make sure both machines are on the same subnet.

Also, will you use static IP or dynamic IP?

Regarding your dsl connection, it depends on how it's going to be setup. If you want both machines to be able to use it, you'll need a router. Another way is to hook up the dsl to a w2k server, and have it acting as a gateway.

I hope that leads you in the right direction.

Please check the version of MAC OS. If it is version 9.2 or later it is TCP/IP compatible and should be able to be configured as a DHCP client. I agree you need a router that is configured for NAT at the very least. After the move check to make sureeach machine gets an IP address (if you have chosen DHCP)and each can see and print to the printer. You will need a FAT partition on the Win2k machine for the computers to share files. I would also suggest a low cost firewall if your organization can afford it.
