Network slowdowns

By rbole ·
We are converting from an NT 4.0 to a Win 2000 network. We have active directory, DNS and DHCP running. Even before the conversion we have periods when our workstations would appear to lockup for ten to twenty seconds or longer. We thought that a new infrastructure (wiring, switches and servers) would resolve the problem. The delays are less frequent and less notiable but still annoying. If I watched the traffic on a workstation, it does not appear to be busy at all, yet it has periods where you can type a word and look up to see it type slowly on the screen. Any Idea where to look for the cause of our slow downs (the whole network appears to be slowwing down at the same time)?

The first thing I would do is drop a packet sniffer on your network and watch what traffic is going through. Look at the time delays on the packets and watch for serieses of long lags. Take a look at what packet is being sent and what it's looking for. A great website that may offer some assistance to you is www.packet-level.com

Laura Chappell's books and seminars are truly outstanding...and a source for countless assistance. Take a look at the "delta time" section right there on the home page for an idea of what I mentioned above.

For a packetsniffer, you want to go to www.ethereal.com! It's free for personal use and only $99 for a full registration. Compare that to the $1000's for Sniffer or Etherpeek! Sure they are wonderful products, but for bang for the buck nothing I know of is even close to Ethereal...and no I'm not affiliate with them in any way. I'm just grateful to them...so I give them a nod whenever appropriate.

Good Luck!

I got the packetsniffer. It gives a lot of info that will take some sorting out. Hopefully I can get to the origin of the problem.

My suggestion is conventional , but it will provide real solution.
U start from the server , switch on it & also the hub\switch connected to that ,then chk the performance ,likewise go one by one .Then u can find out at some point there will be prob ,chk the ethernet card of that system & also the cable , port of the hub .Then try to change the network card & also change the port connected ,U will find the difference.
I faced similar prob of urs.

Thanks,
Kias
