Network speed

By frec1 ·
This is a issue I'm debating with a co worker. I have a feeling I read somewhere that the client workstations effect the speed of the network. Is this true or is it just the server speed that tell the speed of the network. I thought if you have a workstation on a and it slow it effects the speed of the entire network is this true?

If you use a hub then speed is always devided between the amouth of nodes (not workstations and servers) and total bandwith (I.E. if you have 10 nodes on a 100mbps network then the speed is about 10mbps for each user), when any of the nodes is not using the network then that is not considered as taking away speed from the network. Of course a server is more on the network as a workstation but both slow down the network. However if you use a swicth then the speed is spend much better then on hubs, since the switch will make sure that if for example four nodes talk over the network node1 to node2 and node3 to node4 than node1 and node2 will have full bandwidth (provided that no one else is talking ot node1 and node2) and node3 and node4 willalso have full speed.

I'm not a network person but ... Pick a situation with switches, hubs, servers, other workstations, etc. and put this in the situation. A small/slow work station (say a Pentium 133 with 32mb memory and a 10mb ISA network card).

Does this 'workstation' now affect throughput of other nodes on the situation network?

The nodes go through the hub or switch not the slow node.
