    Network upgrade from Office 97

    by alanb ·

We currently have (100 or so) users accessing Office 97 across an NT4/Ethernet network.

We would now like to upgrade to Office 2000 Premium with as little impact as possible.

What would be the simplest way to do so, from both the client and server perspective?

Highly pertinent links would also be appreciated.

Sorry, SMS is not an option.

Question remains – can a network install of Office 97 be simply upgraded, or does it have to be uninstalled and Office 2000 installed in its place?
If this is the case will all clients have to be reconfigured to suit?
Looking for the most painless solution…….

You can upgrade Office 2000 over Office 97. The install will allow you to overwrite the existing. Office 2000 will handle the removal of old components automatically. You can also get the Custom Installation Wizard? which enables administrators to more easily implement a standard configuration while also customizing installations for specific departments. Then just use your existing login script to run the install or you can edit a runonce command into IE 5 so that the first time the user’srun IE they will upgrade their Office 2000. We all know that all users use the internet too.

MS Deployment Notes from the Field

      All good resources.

      Hope this helps

I did this once, by creating an automated install and put it on CD, so all they would do is insert the CD and it would install. 600MB worth. Too large a chunk to be on the LAN.

Or you could kick off an automated install from a login script in segments, by username.
