    Networking a Cable Modem

    I have a customer who wants to share his cable modem with a second computer-laptop. I have installed Linksys Router and 5-port hub. I have DHCP enabled on the router and the computers are being assigned IP’s accordingly. I have the gateway IP and DNS IP recorded in both computers, and the router has the Domain name configured. All of this is correct and it should work – but it doesn’t! Neither machine has internet access. If I replace the second machine which is a laptop, with my laptop andreconfigure it for his service the laptop has internet-instantly, but the first machine still doesn’t. Swap the laptop to the client and internet access stops. Format the laptop HD and reinstall windows – no change! Take clients laptop and routerto my network and plug in each piece in turn, everything works! The Original machine must have something set wrong. Remove all network components in windows, reinstall and replaced network card – no change!

      What is your IP configuration:
      address, netmask, default gateway?
      What is IP configuration which your client got from his ISP? Did your client’s ISP gave him more then one IP-address for his cable connection? If no, then this configuration mustn’twork without special programs/equipment like NAT/proxy server.

        The secret is to not put the domain address in the router! Remove domain, reboot and all is right with the world! Thank all!
