Networking Issue- 2 computers on home network don’t see each other

by william.n.craig . Updated 18 years ago

This should be an easy one for somebdoy. I’m trying to reset up the networking between my desktop machine (running WinXP) and a laptop (running Win2000) connected wirelessly through a linksys router.

I had everything working when I set it up initially last year (file sharing and printer sharing) but I just wiped my hard drive clean on my desktop this week and reloaded everything, and I can’t get the two computers to talk to each other.

The desktop IP is 192.168.1.101
The laptop IP is 192.168.1.100.

Both computers can successfully ping each other from a command prompt, but when I try to search the network for other computers, nothing shows up from either machine.

Laptop is connected to the wireless network without any problems.

Any ideas on how to trouble shoot this? Thanks in advance.
