Networking Mac OS X with a Windows XP

I am trying to get my MAC OS X to network with my Windows XP PC. My Windows PC can see files on my mac through the accessing my ip address. However when I do the reverse I can the following message.

The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in “smb://my pc ip addy here/share name” could not be read or written.
(Error Code -36) I understand the code is an I/O Error. However, I am not sure what that means. How do I bypass this problem? Any information would be very helpful.
