Networking new PC to cabled PC

By MrQuestion ·
I'm new to this p2p stuff...so be gentle.

PC #1. 98SE currently connected to a cable modem. Cable vendor ISP and MS Hotmail.

PC #2. XP home edition, ethernet installed.
I have the cat 5 cable with RJ45s

My question(s):
How do I reconfigure PC #1 for p2p networking with PC#2?

How do I configure PC#2 for networking with PC#1 including file, printer and ISP sharing?
Thanks

First, add an ethernet card to PC#1 and install the driver for it (per the manufacturer's instructions). Then, in the networking tab of the control panel, install the client for Microsoft Networks, TCP/IP, and any other networking protocols you wishto use, and mark the checkbox to enable File and Print Sharing on both machines, if these are not done already. Finally, hookup the cat 5 cable from each machine to an ethernet hub (or just use a crossover cable directly between the machines) and you're done.

Do what he says to configure your LAN. Next in the Win98SE machine, go to add / remove programs under the control panel, select windows setup, find and select the Internet icon and check a box for Internet Connection Sharing. In this case PC#1 should first have 2 net cards, or a net card and a cable modem (typically USB). The wizard is pretty self explanatory, and will create a disk for you to use to configure #2 (or any more you want to add).

Also, broadband ISP's strongly discourage installing file and printer sharing on your connected machine (for good reason). If you must, make sure you have a firewall program. (A good free one can be found at www.zonelabs.com - Configureing this is not too hard, but it is another issue. :) )

Thanks, I did just that and it worked well. The file sharing works OK, the printer is a little slow off of the slaved machine.
