Networking Problem

By dhsommer ·
I am trying to network my Desktop and Laptop computers. Sharing printers and external hard drives seems to work fine. Ping is successful on both machines. I cannot access shared drives and folders on either machine. The net view command returns a System Error 5. Any suggestions?

make sure both computers have the same work group name , and if possible make the computer name simple ,make sure under the sharing you have check the boxes that allow you to share
on the network , for safer sharing just share folders and not you whole c drive , you also may have to turn off windows file wall if it is enabled ,

If both of these machines are XP then run the network setup wizard in the control pannel. Ensure that both systems are on the same workgroup. The symptons you are describing sound like a Firewall issue on the machines. Please let me know if you have firewall on either machine
