networking promblem

I am running winxp and win98se. I have a linksys 4 switch router/dsl. the winxp is connected to the internet and I can browsebut the win98 pc has nothing showing in network neighborhood. I can’t get the two computer to talk or share the internet. I am lost as to what to do. My win 98 pcis showing the nic woking properly and when I click updat drivers it does this but when it ask you to restart the computer it won’t restart. It just hangs at the Microsoft screen which says windows is shutting down. Nothing is happening so I have to do a hard shut down . then when I come back Up the drivers for the nic are not installed. Please help if you can and keep in mind I’m am a beginner at all of this. Thanks!!!
