Networking Win 98 and Win ME

By PMaio ·
I have my 2 computers networked. # 1 using Win98 & #2 using WinME. I am planning on reconfiguring the # 1 computer with Windows 2000 using NTFS. Will I have any problems networking the 2 computers with the 2 different file systems?

Networking Win 98 and Win ME

There are hundreds of posts here at Techrepublic on networking Win9x and WinNT/2K/XP and difficulities people have.
The reason for the problems is entirely security in nature. You see, Win9x (and that includes ME) do NOT have security, whereas NT/2K/XP do. So, often times people report that they can set up NetBEUI or TCP/IP just fine and PING from one machine to another. It is just in the file and resource sharing that they have problems. People are uanble to get files (again, usually) from the NT/2K/XP box from the 9x box.
That is because the NT kernel operating systems require that inbound connections all have a valid user name and password in order to access files.
So, to avoid this problem, set up a user account on your 9x machine, then set up the SAME user account on your Win2K machine. The same user name AND password.
Then, log into the 9x box with this user name and password. At that point, you should be able to go over the wire to the 2K box, access a shared folder on it and get the files you want.

hope this helps
