Networking Win XP with Win 98

By mdresher ·
I was wondering if there are any hardware or software issues with networking Win XP into a already networked Win 98 computers? The 2 laptops running 98 can talk and share files and print, but when I try to set up the new XP computer I can't get them to see it or the XP can't see them. Thank you for any assistance.

Mark

XP with SP 2 has a firewall which will interfer with file and print sharing. Further, you need to ensure the NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on your NIC. W9X [inclusing ME] finds other machines via NetBIOS [machine name] rather than IP address.

Hi

Make sure that File and Printer Sharing is enabled, and configure the Windows Firewall to allow File and Printer sharing traffic. If you are using a third party firewall then configure it to allow inbound and outbound traffic for your local network. Make sure the accounts used on the Win98 machines are duplicated exactly on the WinXP machine.

Good luck

Above responses are valid.

Ensure that all 3 are in same Workgroup as well.

This may show up twice. Answered several hours ago and hasn't shown up yet.

First two responses are good. However, ensure that all 3 PCs are members of the same workgroup. XP has a different default workgroup that does Win98.

XP with SP 2 has a firewall which will interfer with file and print sharing. disable the firewall in network adapter properties.
