    Networking/Win2K textbooks

I teach Networking to High School students. I have been informed that next year I will be migrating to Windows 2000 from NT 4.0. I have not been happy with the textbooks and curriculum previously chosen for this course and I would like to ask the professional IT community for recommendations on textbooks for my students. Many of the students have no knowledge of networking, so texts that cover everything from networking basics through a working knowledge of Windows 2000 is needed. This is atwo-year course.

In looking at the Microsoft Press site, I found the following series that I was considering. ALS Networking Essentials, ALS Windows 2000 Server, ALS Win NT Network Admin, ALS Windows NT Tech Support. Any comments, pro, con or indifferent?

    Thanks for any input!

Take a look at Amazon as they supply a wide range of books. You could try – Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows 2000 : Fast & Easy (Fast & Easy), or even Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional : Student.

I teach the Windows 2000 track in MCSE programs, both the 5 day courses and longer, more involved courses. We have been very impressed and happy with the MCSE
Training Kits by Microsoft Press for at least the four core exams.

      Windows 2000 Professional
      Windows 2000 Server
      Windows 2000 Active Directory Services
      Windows 2000 Network Infrastructure Administration.

We used the third edition of Networking Essentials for the basics and it meshed nicely with the above volumes.

If your students are writing exams you will find all the books inadequate to provide a complete enough picture. We supplemented the course materials with the Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit and the Windows 2000 Professional Resource Kit and this did nicely.I was pretty unimpressed with the MSPress course materials for the NT4 track, but the Windows 2000 stuff is very very good in comparison.

Ok, thanks! That is the kind of input I was needing. Although this is perhaps a more advanced track than High School students could or should undertake, it does tell me what I need to know about the MSPress texts. I have used the second edition of Network Essentials and thought it was fairly good for beginners, but was not familiar with the quality of their other texts. Glad to have the tip on the resource kits as well.

        Thanks again.
