Networking Win98 and XP PC's

By markin ·
We are starting to buy XP PC's but the majority of our network is still running Win98 peer-to-peer. We have our C drives shared on the Win98 network but you have to enter a password to have full access to the C drive. How do you do this on a XP PC? I'm wanting to do this just like our Win98 PC's and I see where you can share the C drive in XP but not where you have to enter a password to gain access to the C drive.

Please help....Thanks....Mark

Try creating a user account on the XP machine that is the same as one of the windows network username and password accounts to see if you then can access the XP's C: drive. If this becomes too cumbersome because you have a lot of 98 machines it might be time to consider a server based network that contains user accounts. If it is just a few 98's you will need to add an account for each windows account on the XP machines

So this is the only way for Win98 PC's to gain access to the C drives of XP PC's? I can't believe that XP doesn't have this feature. I go around to our various PC's here to install programs that are on my C drive (it's password protected) and I would have to setup accounts for all my users in order to access my C drive from their PC's? Please tell me this isn't true..

When I setup a Peer-Peer network I share the designated folders on the C:drive create a user account for each of the users in the network and give them admin rights. I sometimes have to enable netbui to get them all to see each other. We only use Peer-Peer for small remote offices. All regional offices are server based authentication.

the only other way is to map a drive in DOS using the net user command and include the /user switch. For example, net use Z: \\winxp\c /user:username. You will then be prompted for the password. For more info on the net use command, type net use /? at a command prompt.

A server would benefit you here where you can store necessary files on the server and everyone is a member/user of the domain. You could then give everyone access to the particular share where the information you need to retrieve from each win98 is located.
