Networking win.98SE to Win,2K pro.

By j.mckillop ·
I've just set up a new pc in my peer to peer network running Win.2K. All pc's are showing in the network window. The only problem is when I try to access the pc running W2K from a pc running Win98, I'M asked for a password. I didn't set up any password and I enabled access to everyone on this pc.Any suggestions how I can find this password or gain access to the W2K pc from the rest of the network?

Networking win.98SE to Win,2K pro.

Hi James,

There is more than one cause for this, but the most common one for peer to peer as you described is the userid from the 'client' win98 pc doesn't match a valid id on the Win2K PC.

In other words, go into programs, administrative tools, user manager, and create userids and password combinations that match what your users are using at their win98 pc's.

Keep in mind that if the user changes their win98 password without the password being also changed on the win2k PC, then they will have to type in their old win2k password when they try to access your new pc.

Hope this helps,
Howard H.

Howard, Thanks for your reply but I couldn't find user manager. I found a great article on MS knowledgebase (Q258717). it did the trick.
James.
