Networking XP with 98 user authenticatio

By escheitz ·
I cannot get Windows 98 computer to access my windows XP professional computers over the network. A few days ago, everything was working fine. I had no trouble accessing the XP from 98 boxes. I loaded 814995 and 816093 from the update site. I causeda few problems with Norton Internet security 2003 so I used the system restore to roll my system back. Everything seemed fine but now none of the computers with windows 98 can connect to it, when you try you get the "enter network password" dialog box. I can still access the XP computers with the other windows 2000 and XP computers though. I have not changed any user accounts or security settings. I think the problems lies somewhere in the user authentication of the windows 98 computers. I Any suggestions!!!

the XP box needs to have user accounts for the 98 machines. they need to be exactly the same username and password used when the 98 user logs into his machine.

Thanks for the idea, but I have already verified that.

Tell your XP system to audit logins (use the Local Security Settings applet in the Administrative Tools) for success and failure. Then review the Security event log after trying to connect from 98. This should give you an idea what the problem may be.

I have done this and I get Event ID 529 and 680. Not much help to me, because this just means (I think) that the XP cannot authenticate the user. I want to know why, because it did before, and the user accoutant has not changed, nor can I add any others.

Restoring XP using the last system restore point can set the baseline back to early working days!
so default settings can return this way.
Do youre Win98 machines see the XP shares?
in "my network places"?
(And youre not using any firewall?)
Ifnot:
On youre XP computers
Netbios over tcp/ip!
(or tcp/ip NetBios helper service is not started)
Or the server service is not started
But if so:
There still should be a account difference (as earlier stated) but if this really is OK as you said, then there could be a security policy twarting youre efforts.
try using Admin. tools / Local security settings / security options / Network security: Lan Manager authentication level
or else:
Local security settings / user rights assignment /access this computer from the network
And if all this fails try recreating the account and groupmemberships you want to use on the XP machines.
(Admin. Tools / Computer Management)
Or last try:
recreate the share and the permissions.
Hope this helps

I have tried the system restore, no luck. I can see the computers in Network Places, but cannot view any shares on them. I have uninstalled all firewalls, and have tried NetBIOS over TCP/IP. I believe it is something to do with the LAN Manager authentication level, but I have checked this setting in Local Policy, and in the registry, and am set to the correct level. I do not think it has anything to do with permissions because I cannot even view the shares yet. (I could be wrong though)

I like some of the technical replies, but what about the non techniocal you may be overlooking? I have had a problem like this before in my home network. I tried all kinds of thing like the suggestions above, and then I tried breaking the link with the computers by disconnecting the network cables, then shutting them down, reconnect, then power up, and everything worked as if there was no problem. The weird thing was that some surge prevented them from recognising each other and until I disconnected them the wouldn't.

It's not much to go on, but it may help. At least it was a waste of my typing.
