What is the future of neural nets and processing? As processing capacity increases and the cost drops will it be possible that a simple home computer have 100’s if not 1000’s of processors? How will they be organized?
I believe that VLSI styled chips will be complete processing units modelled after a nueuron. Several such chips will be installed on a card then installed into a backplane tower. Software will organize the processors into varied arrangements. Control will be driven from a PC similiar to todays desktop and communication may be done by firewire like connectivity. you should note that each processor unit is independent of the others and is designed for pure crunching of data. A sensory array could feed data to the correct neurons via a multiplexed channel. Microcontrollers could facilitate a variety of actions.
What uses would this have? Off the Shelf software could use it to for high grade speech recognition, visual accuity, and human centric computing. Sophisticated robots could complete complex task around the home or office. Complex engineering, architectual, and medical operations could be facilitated.
Very complex intelligent data analysis and knowledge forming techniques could lead to break through technologies or quantum leaps in knowledge.
