New domain user profile doesn't work

By myteinfo ·
I am trying to create a three domain profiles for a small NT network. The PDC runs NT 4.0 with SP6a
And workstation runs 4.0 with sp4. It failed after several tries. Here is what I did:

1.Log into a NT 4.0 workstation as a TemplateUser.
2.Set the desktop: create icons and connect to a file share. After the desktop looks what I want, log out and log back in as an domain administrator.

3.I did the following steps:
1)Map a network drive to PDC computer: \\< pdc name >\c$
2)Atthe system property, selected user, TemplateUser, copy to:
(Browsing to pdc directory as below)

P:\winnt\system32\repl\export\scripts\profile.man
3)Then at run command, run P:\winnt\system32\repl\export\scripts\profile.man
4)Rename ntuser.dat to ntuser.man

4.Log into PDC and created a user call: testuser with user profile path: %LOGONSERVER%\NETLOGON\TemplateUser.man
5.Added TemplateUser into system policy and modified the TemplateUser?s property and saved it.
6.At this point, the user profile and system profile are complete.
7.When log in from work station as testuser, I could not log in. It said could find the
User?s profile.

*** Shared is enable for: c:\winnt\system32\repl\export\scripts
Can anyone tell me what I have missed. This is my first time creating NT domain profile.
Please give me advice to make this profile working.
Thank very much

New domain user profile doesn't work

Looks like you may have skipped over setting the permissions on the profile when you did the Copy To. Redo the copy and make sure to do the needed changes in the 'Permitted to use' area.

Map to the NETLOGON share to see if the profile is there.
If you are using replication on the server then make sure the profile is appearing in the C:\winnt\system32\repl\import\scripts directory as the server shares this directory out as NETLOGON by default. (make sure the PDC is set to replicate to itself)

Hope this helps...

Thanks for your advice.

In "Permitted to", should I add the TemplateUser account from domain PDC?

I have anothr question. In Step 3, should I run P:\winnt\system32\repl\export\scripts\profile.man from the workstation where I copy the TemplateUser profile to PDC or I need to run on the PDC itself?

Do I need to add all roamin profile onto NETLOGON folder and how?

Thanks

After you login w/ Templateuser, log back in w/ admin, the go to the system menu and user profiles tab. From there click on templateuser and click copy to and put in the path where the profile will be on the server, make sure you change on the bottom "permitted to use" and put testuser in it. Then make sure testuser has the proper rights to the folder.

If the profile path is : %LOGONSERVER%\NETLOGON\TemplateUser.man
Then the nt machine logged into will look for %LOGONSERVER%\NETLOGON\TemplateUser.man\ntuser.man, or dat
leave out the file name, nt will find it, you should put the directory name here, not the filename

Good luck
Ron.

Profile directorys should have write access enabled for that particulair user, so you might want to use profile paths like : \\bigserver\profiles$\%username% (will automaticly be created and access set right)
put the %username% in your template, soyou won't have to type the user profile path over and over again.

New domain user profile doesn't work

by Shanghai Sam In reply to New domain user profile d ...

The first time it did not work. I deleted all files under scripts. Then
did it over again. When I came to create
system policy from the same workstation.
I got error: Unable to open template file c:winnt\INF\commond.ADM
I opened Policy file. The files of type
shows: Template files(*.POL). It should
be Policy File (*.POL). Then Create a folder in Scripts call: NTPconfig.pol
In the file name field: I enter:
p:\WINNT\system32\Repl\Export\Script\NTPconfig.POL
It did not work. I do not know why. Permission is given. The big problem I have now is creating a system policy for templatUser. Can you list a brief steps how to create a system policy for
templateUser in this case.

Should I run system policy Editor from the same NT workstation or on the NT server itself?

Thank you very much for your time.
