new federal overtime rules

The Economic Policy Institute warns that 90,000 "computer employees" will be among those adversely impacted by the new federal overtime rules. These workers will either be affected by the $100,000 salary cap or excluded from overtime based on how jobs will be now be classified, which would allow employers to term just about everyone ineligible for OT. What do you think about this?

I think it will have little effect

Just because an employer may not HAVE TO pay overtime, doesn't mean they won't. It's still a competitive environment to attract the best and the brightest IT professionals into an organization, and paying overtime - even though they may not HAVE TO - is one such way.

Moreover, if people realize that what they can offer a company will trump a government rule every time, they'll get their overtime or higher salary in the end. After all, companies need employees just as much as employees need companies. And employees - as well as employers - need to realize that a win-win scenario is what we should strive for.
