New Folder command missing in Win XP

By LockOutGirl ·
Recently, I've discovered that when I try to create a new folder, I can't. Right clicking on the desktop and in Windows Explorer reveals no "new" option, nor is it under File. If I click on "make a new folder" link on the left of Windows Explorer, nothing happens. Doing a little research, I think my registry has been corrupted, probably during a software issue a few weeks back that affected the registry. This seems to be the closest thing to an answer that I've found so far - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/180257

However, when I go to my registry and try to edit the key I'm directed to, there isn't anything there. I go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers but there is no \New. I don't edit the registry much, so I'm not familiar with it. Can I just create that folder and enter the value I need? I do have the copy of the registry from a few weeks ago that would most likely have the proper value, but that reintroduces the problem I had with the registry then.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I can't kill this computer, at least not during work hours..

Yes

Go ahead and add the new key with the default string this should cure your issue. Just right click on contextmenuhandlers and select new key, create the key new then left click on it. This will bring up the blank key with the value default (value not set). Double click on default then paste the value: {D969A300-E7FF-11d0-A93B-00A0C90F2719} into it then exit the registry (it saves by default).

No reboot is required as this takes effect once the registry is saved, just removed that key from my pc and could not create new folders. Put it back and new folders are good to go.

Thanks! Worked like a charm! Glad to know that fooling with the registry is easier than I expected.
