new hard disc not initialized

I have added another hard drive into my computer to act as a backup for my important files.
It has been reconised but it is saying that it is unallocated and not initialized.
Help Pleese

If you're using Windows XP, you can use the Computer Management tool to partition and format it.

Linux you can use any one of the various partitioning tools (vary depending on distro).

Open 'Disk Management' and right click the HDD.

Assuming you are running some form of Windows (you didn't say) right click on 'My Computer' and select Manage from the context menu. In the left hand column of the Computer Management window, select Disk Management (under Storage).

Right click on the unallocated HDD and create a new volume.
