New hard drive

By c_ammidown ·
I was wondering if anyone had some good ideas on installing a new hard drive. I want to take all the info from my old drive and put it on the new drive. I don't want to run a slave, because I will be using the old drive to setup another computer. I could try going through the network, but I would rather another method. The other problem I have is that NT is stating that my system can only take a 7 gig drive. Anyway around this?

1)First you may want to flash the BIOS,this will allow the system to recognize the large drive.
2)Using a third party software suchas drive image or disk copy, would be an alternative,or you could setup the new drive as slave and backup the old drive by transferring to new drive, then take the old drive out and set new drive jumpers back to master

7 Gig is the approximate limitation of the primary, bootable partition on the hard drive, not the physical drive itself. If your drive is bigger than 7 Gig, create a primary partition for the operating system using 7 Gig or less, and an extended partition (with as many logical partitions as you desire) using the rest of the drive.

Using the old drive temporarily as a slave is a good idea if all you want to transfer is data, but if you actually want to clone the new drive from the old, you will need to use Symantec's Ghost or Powerquest's Drive Image.
