new hard drive

By cyberjan ·
I have an aptiva that hangs on the aptiva screen.
I put a new hard drive in. When I F1 and enter setup. It reads it correctly as 40 gig its a PII, 350 MHz, 128 memory.

I booted to Won 2000 prof disk installed the OS fine.
However on the next boot it reads insert boot disk and press enter. I put in the win 2000 disk and it boots up fine into win 2000. I take out the disk and it gives the same insert disk message...what did I do wrong

First thing I would check is the boot sequence. Sometimes in the boot sequence you have to choose which hard drive to boot from.

IS the other hard drive still installed? If so disconnect the drive and see if it boots.

I would also put the Hard drive as the first boot device for now and see what happens.

Check for any disks in either the CD-ROM or floppy drives and remove them.

How is BIOS detecting the hard drive as master or slave? It maybe detecting it as a slave and that might cause it not to boot to the drive.

Yes, someone must have gone in and changed the jumper, I was just assuming it was master since it was the only HD. Also while I was looking in the setup I saw that the memory was installed in slot 1 and 3. I fixed that to 1 and 2 and the jumper now both the old hard disk works and the new one! Anyone need a Hard drive? thanks
