New IE8 messed me up bad

I need help...tried to install new IE 8 and now my laptop wont even show my desktop icons, any suggestions would be appreciated by an old man in deserate situation...tried "last known good", safe mode, etc..nothing worked..

there was nothing on the desktop to click on, windows XP, could not get to system restore...is there a command prompt for that??

after you boot, and get past the username and passwd screen. Wait a minute, and if the desktop still doesn't show up try hitting ctrl+shift+Esc, from there click File > Run > and type explorer.exe. That should start up the task bar. If not I would try a system restore. go to the run command and copy and paste this in "%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe" no quotes, and from there you can select a time and date to restore from (choose a date that is before you installed IE

sir..I tried that and each of the 5 times i did..the computer, laptop, froze up...extremely frustrated at this point...ctl+shift+esc bought up the task manager box which also froze up when I opened up the run box...what do I do besides beat this thing with ahammer

It sounds like something hinky occured when you installed IE8. If you can get into safe mode, un-intsall IE8 through the add/remove programs, in the control panel. The system will revert back to IE6 or 7 depending on which one was utilized before the upgrade. Once this is done you should be able to re-install IE8.

when I finally was able to get into safe mode, Iclicked on control panel and it took hours for anything to appear, which was a box saying that it could not complete the command
