New Install picked wrong drive letter

by gramnpop . Updated 19 years ago

Hi
Installing XP SP2 to new system.
Twin raptors in raid on Asus Mobo (p4v8x-mx)
WD 320 MB data drive.
Card reader usb powered

What happened:
Installing XP SP2
Instead of calling the raid array disk letter “C”, it gave it letter “h” and listed the card reader as C, D, E & F and the DVD as G. The Boot drive is now H and the data drive, which XP insisted on installing to also, is I.

Problem:
Some programs do not operate properly although they install OK. Constantly get error message – “Windows – no disk”
Spybot Search and Destroy is an example of one such program.
I have tried but of course Windows won’t let me reassign the “boot” or “system” drive letters.

How the ?#$@% did Windows end up doing what it did? And –

Is there a fix short of reinstalling XP with all hardware removed except the raid array?

Never had this one before and hate to put in the time to do a reinstall on a new system!

Thanks for your help!
