New laptop HDD not recognized.

By randerson7 ·
Newly installed HDD in Dell Inspiron 6000 is not recognized. XP install from CD is halted. Previous HDD had physical damage and was also not recognized by laptop at end. Any suggestions.

A bit more information Re SATA Driver Installation

by OH Smeg In reply to Probably need to

You need to press the F6 Key the moment that the first Blue Screen appears on the XP Installer. Then when prompted you need to insert a Floppy with the SATA Drivers copied to the Root of the Floppy and press enter after the Floppy is in the A Drive.

If you want to Boot off a CD you need to Slipstream your own Install CD as XP doesn't natively support SATA Drives or use the Dell Recovery CD.

However if the HDD is not available to the Dell Recovery CD you need to test your hardware with something like the Ultimate Boot CD which is a lot better than what Dell provides.

It's free to download and available from here

Directions for making your own Slipstreamed Install Disc for XP are here while they are aimed at including SP2 and Hot Fixes you can include the SATA Driver for your Hardware.
