New SATA HD install issues

By donholco ·
I purchased a new HP Pavilion with Vista to operate a CNC (computer numerically controlled) machine. My CNC software is not Vista compatible but will be eventually. I was told to buy a new HD, unplug the existing and hook up to the new HD to install a new edition of Windows XP Home. I cannot get the computer to recognize the new HD or CD-rom to do the install disk that came with the HD. Both HDs are identical SATA units. I've made the CD the first boot but it comes up with no driver found. Help.

Are you trying to replace the existing HD? If so then see the pin settings of the HD you are trying to install. As the CD drive would be your slave and the new harddrive is your master. So set the pins on the harddrive you purchased to master then also check in the CMOS settings if the hardware in auto detect mode and then try to load. But if you do not have a Operating system it will not boot. Also check if you are harddrive is formated and ready to use. Some harddrives have to be made ready to use by running the setup files for the harddrive format it and then use them. May be this is the reason why your computer could not recognize the hardware. You have to download the files from the harddrive manufacturer's website. Let me know if you still have issues with the exact error to help you fix the issue.

I am sorry there are no jumper pin settings for SATA HD. Please let me know the brand so that I can check the settings. You need to plug the cables in SATA 1 to make it primary.

I have not removed the leads to the /cd, just unplugged the existing HD and plugged those leads into the new one.

I jusr unplugged the existing HD and used the same leads on the new HD. It is a WD SATA300.
