new server 4.2 w/cdrw

By chalejudy ·
Hello,
An HP Pavilion 504n was purchased with a CDRW to be used as a Novell 4.2 server. We do have the release service pack 9 for once we get the server up and running we can apply the patches.

We want to be able to back the partition that carries the server up onto the CDRW that is under XP. Having a heck of a time getting the Novell to load correctly even after we have created the DOS partition. The installation drops us out to an error. So we manually start the load but then we get stuck as to the NIC card in the pavilion.

how can you tell us what NIC card/type. think it is on the motherboard but cannot really tell

The machine comes with rewriteable software but since we are backing up a partition and not a drive we need some software to go with this. Is there anyone aware of how to do this with XP and Novell? We (my network person) and I talked about Ghost and Virtual machine. Not convinced these are the best solutions for this customer.

Please send your replies to consultant4u@email.toast.net
I appreciate your time and consideration with this matter. Any suggestions is very much appreciated.

There's a couple things that need to be said up front, I think:

NetWare cannot be started from XP; you need to create a DOS partition of 500MB or so (MS-DOS 6.22 is my person choice). The Netware installation process will create the NetWare partions that the server will use.

I don't believe NetWare supports any CDRW devices. If it did, I suspect they'd have to be SCSI type, which I kinda doubt it what you have. The CDRW software that came with the machine is useless under netware.

Having said that, I should also say that it is possible to contsruct a dual-boot computer -- one that can run withe WinXP or NetWare, but not both at the same time. You'll have to have 3 partitions on the hard drive (Windows, DOS, NetWare), along with some type of boot mananger, such as Boot Commander.

In that configuration, there may be software that will run under XP (and hence use the CDRW) to backup the NetWare partition.

Almost forgot --

As for the NIC, it's probably an intel deriviative. A quick visit to the HP web site with the model number of the computer will confirm. While there, you'll also want to see if HP has NetWare _server_ drivers for the NIC

What version of DOS are you using? DOuble check that the config.sys file has no memory managers (HIMEM or EMM386) loaded. Also, set the files=50; probably not really required, but I usually do it anyway.

after much chagrin and arguing with HP (who said i had to buy a new operating system to do this with this configuration) we are going to partition to dos and then partial ntfs for windows 2000 and the reset novell. at least windows 2000 has the drivers for the cd rom
