new to macs

By paw_blue ·
Hi I have recently been asked a few questions about an imac system. I am more than competent on any pc however macs are still very new territory to me. Firstly the cmac in question has a partition on the harddrive, what equivelant program to fdisk is available for it in order to remove/alter the partition. How do I format a partition on a mac. the system in question is running os 9 (I think ) Any help or information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Insert the Imac setup disk into the CD-Rom drive and restart. While restarting hold down the 'C' key to instruct the iMac to boot from CD.

Once booted, start the Drive Setup program from the CD. It's located in the Utilities folder on the CD.
In the list of drives click on iMac HD and the click the Initialize button. When the next window appears click on the Custom Setup button. COnfigure the partition (s) and set it for Mac OS Extended format. When this is done you can then initialize the disk.

Then you're ready to install your OS...good luck, hope this helps!

Just insert the CD with the operative system that you want to install and restart your Mac, be sure to hold down the C when you hear the sound and keep it until the Mac starts booting from the CD.

When it has booted, you will see the CD folder opened on the desktop.

If you want to change your partition. then you can go into the "Utilities" folder that you find on the CD. In there you will find something called like Disk Utilities. Try that.

If you just want to format the hard drive (partition) you can select its icon on the desktop and choose Special - Erase from the menu bar.

Do you need more information? The Mac offers a good Help facility from the Finder.

If you are still unable to format (initialize) the drive, do you mind explaining where you're having a problem? The instructions I gave were directly from apple and fairly specific, but if you're getting stuck somewhere along the way, perhaps if youlet us know what's wrong we can try to help or further elaborate.

Maybe this will help:

If this still doesn't get you pointed in the right direction, I would recommend you contact Apple's Tech Support. They should be able to help.

Good luck.
