New to networks

By techbech ·
I haven't exactly inherited a network but our network manager up and quit one day and left myself, a software specialist in our school district, and my boss. Neither one of us know networks at all. What would be a good place to start in the quest for knowledge of a Novell network? I am a reader and understand new technology somewhat rapidly. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

You don't say what version of NetWare you are using, but I guess it would be 4.x or 5.x. A good place to start, if your budget will allow it, would be the Novell CNA class. You'll learn most of what you need to know to administer a Novell network. Since you have a computer background, it should be no problem. If you can't get training, get a CNA book for your version. I can't recommend one since I don't know the version. The book should cover most of what you need to know and will be a good reference. The other thing to do would be get familiar with the Novell knowledgebase online. It's one of the best in the business and can answer many questions. It's at

support.novell.com

Hope that helps.

Obtaining your CNA is the best route and it only requires passing one test. The test is usually adaptive and only has 15-25 questions. 15 at the least if you answer majority correct. If you answer incorrectly and, you get drilled in that area to see if you know it. That's where the extra questions past 15 come in.

The test will run you about $100.

If you previous Network manager kept and list of problems he may have had or perhaps an e-mail based helpline, your best bet would be to run through already completed problems etc, if he wasn't that organised set up a bogus user and then practice giving a taking away rights, from experianece most of your day today problems will be with granting access rights and this can all be acheived in Netadmin. I always find the best way to learn is hands on and at the deep end. Remember there are always people willing to help, just post your questions on here and I'm sure someone will get back to you... Best of luck.
