New Virus or a hoax?

By billiewebbjr ·
Norton AntiVirus has just informed me that it has identified a virus that it can't fix.

The virus' name is NITEFALL.5815

I dont know what to think about this virus alert because of the file's uncommon extension.

Does anyone have any information on a nitefall.5815 virus?

ThanX

New Virus or a hoax?

by dmiles In reply to New Virus or a hoax?

Symantec Security Response uncovers hoaxes on a regular basis. These hoaxes usually arrive in the form of an email. Please disregard the hoax emails - they contain bogus warnings usually intent only on frightening or misleading users. The best course of action is to merely delete these hoax emails. Please refer to this page whenever you receive what appears to be a bogus message regarding a new virus, or promotion that sounds too good to be true.

Just to add the Symantec link that - I guess- the above poster has forgotten; below is their link that shows almost all known virus-hoaxes.

NITEFALL.5815 is a virus. It infects .com and .exe files. 5815 is the version of the virus and not a file extension. You should find out which files are infected, delete them and restore them if they are needed.
Apparently, the only payload is thatit displays a silly message but you shouldn't take any risks and clean you computer asap.

I forgot to mention that it's memory resident so you should boot from a clean disk first.

It's Nightfall.5815. Could be a false alarm, though.
