New Year - New Direction!

By Presidio ·
It is time for a change in my working life.
I've hated my job for too long. The reasons are many - the end result is the same, time to change.

I am a programmer - both talented and experienced (said blushing)--- regardless we all know that work is hard to find.

I don't really care if I continue to work in IT or not - but I do NOT want to work more than 40 hours! Part time would be great.

For those who have made a change I pose the questions ---
What are you doing now?
Do you like it?
How did you get into it?

Stupid Question & Comment

by dafe2 In reply to New Year - New Direction!

For backround, I'm in operations & you guys are my 'enemy':-)

I say that because we have 2 or 300 programmers in various capacities & scream for more.(SAP Peoplesoft & WEB) Where is this lack of work I've been hearing about? IMO a talented guy has one **** of a future. It's in operations that the 'weeding' out of the low-life tech has begun.
(My take anyway)

I'm not sure where your skillset lies but consulting sounds like a fit for you, IF you can stay away from the 16 hour day that usually comes with owning your own business.

Then again, if you can hop on a SAP team you have it made too.

My two cents, good luck & HNY

(i will agree with you on the weeding out low life tech from operation comment.)

my background: ~ 10 yrs exp. in total. 5 yrs doing lvl 1. 5 yrs doing lvl 2 and info sec.

i am trying to get a little IT security consulting business off the ground. if i can't do it in 3 years - i am out of IT. i think i can make more (or at least same!) $$$ doing something else and not having to put so much effort into it.

my advice to you re: your current job dissatisfaction - try to find you silver lining - all jobs have one! - it will help you cope with the dissatisfaction.

good luck,

I have not made a change yet, but have some on the back burner. I, like it sounds like you are, got burnt out...I was testing software in my dreams and keeping a notepad at my bedside to scribble down the test scenarios as I worked them out in my sleep.

I realize that I've been neglecting a whole hemisphere of my brain, and have been writing, painting, doing a lot more creative projects. I took a class in photography. I'm intending on pursuing a new degree next fall in library science, if all stars align properly.

Best of luck in finding your way!
