Newbie --Webserver w/ Dynamic IP?

By gkrauss ·
Hi all;
I am running a new install of win2k server on Time Warner's Road Runner service(cable modem). I would like to house my website on my own server to run streaming video and other apps. But, I can only use DHCP to get an IP--Time Warner wont give me a static IP address. Would it still be possible to run a webserver from my PC even though I have no permanent IP? Thank you!

It is possible to run the web server with a dynamic IP, but there may be times when the IP address that some users have is not the current one for your server.

It is probable that Roadrunner does not allow its home cable service customers to run web servers. Most cable modem companies have policies against such use. You might lose your account for such an infraction.

Burly;

Thanks for your insights. I spoke to a Time Warner tech, and he said if there isn't much traffic on the server, then it wouldnt raise a red flag. Can you tell me more about the actual implementation of a webserver with a dynamic IP? Thanks much.

There are services, mostly commercial, that will provide DNS for you and update your zone file every time your IP changes.

Voila - Web server with a dyanamic IP that can always be found.

Try these:
http://www.dyndns.org/
http://www.tzo.com/

As for implementation:

In IIS you can allocate an IP for each web site. If you select {all available} then any change in your IP will not affect your site.
