News Readers

I need to identify a program or collection of programs to perform the following tasks. I don't need the details on implementing just yet and I'll try to figure all of that out for myself, but I need to know where to start.

1) download news articles from various newsgroups and/or review news articles at the newsgroup server live
2) allow users to review the articles on their PCs via a web browser

The server that I need to download these articles to and server them from will be Solaris 8. I would prefer incorporating Apache to make the articles available to the users via web browser. I have found many news reader programs (trn, slm, pine, inn) but I can't seem to get detailed information on whether or not I will be able to use these with a web browser except for trn and inn, which seem to be screen oriented only and have no browser capability.

If you know of a good tool (free or cost) please provide the tool and where I can go to get more information and to download/purchase this tool.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

A quick search came up with this, I make no claims as to its performance:

It sounds to me like what you are really looking for is an NNTP server for your Solaris box. This I believe is included as an optional install with your Apache. Just set it up to replicate your specific newsgroups with your ISP's servers.

Then your users can use any newsreader client and just point to your "local" server. Outlook Express is a reasonable newsreader (the co$t is about right), while Forte Agent (forteinc.com) is the choice of the "warez" crowd. Personally, I prefer to browse newsgroups from Netscape Communicator.
