By beachmachine ·
I was just wondering if anyone is planning on or has, started studying/working on another IT track after they finished their mcse. I'm thinking about going into data wharehousing/SQL, any thoughts. bad choice/good choice.

Depends on your IT "Track"

by davidpmartin In reply to next track AFTER mcse

From my experience in IT so far, there seems to be two distinct tracks - Development and Sys/Net Admin. These also apeal or don't appeal, based on what you like to do.

Like to code or develop unique solutions? Then the Development track would seem to fit what you want to do. Like to think in terms of the big picture and solve problems that interact with each other? Then Sys/Net Admin is your track. The point is you must decide what kind of things YOU like doing and then follow the IT track that best suits you.

I was a programmer and web developer for the first three years I was in the IT business. While I was very good at it - even working as a contract worker for Microsoft for a while - it was interesting enough to do and keepfood on the table. But it wasn't really exciting to me.

Then I got the chance to move over and become a systems and network engineer. I liked doing SYS admin work, but I found my true NIRVANA in network engineering and design. I worked hardon getting My CCNA, CCNP, CCDA, and CCDP, and am currently about half way thru my Cisco Security Specialist 1 cert. Bottem line: I love what I do and will have even better opportunities in the future.

Why do i like the network stuff so much better? Because I'm a big picture type - I like abstract thinking. Programming/coding was to detailed and too far down in the weeds for me.
