NIC Recommendations

I am looking for a NIC to use with a SW based Protocol Analyzer.

I have found that just because a NIC is in Promiscuous Mode it does not mean that it will pass up errored frames and yes a HW based Protocol Analyzer is the best way to capture these errors.

Does anyone know of any PCMCIA or PCI cards on the market today that will pass up errored frames (CRCs,Misaligns, ect.)without a custom driver.
Please state make and model of NIC.

Laura Chappell (from www.packet-level.com) recommends:

Intel 10/100 series (Pro/Pro+/whatever)

Xircom (newer -- 2001 or later) - update the driver from their website

If you're into packet analysis, make sure to check out her site!

Well it is time that I award points.
I still haven't found a card that will pass all of these erros
CRCs,Misaligns, ect. Some will do one of them. I am still looking for a card that will see Bad CRC's, FCS's and misaaligns.

I prefer the 3Com 3C90x card, you can also download the latest drivers from thier site. We have totally switched over to 3Com cards, we find them the easiest to configure.

Thank you for the responce, I have tried the 3C90x (3C905cx-tx-m)and even with the latest driver and 2 different analyzer SW packages it seems only to report FCS errors.

Thank you for the feedback. I will try these cards and then award the points.

I use Intel 82557-based NICs (Pro 10/100) for that and they work fine.
