No CD-ROM in Device Manager

By ehundrieser ·
Have a problem on a Win95OSR2 PC. For the world of it, I am unable to have the PC recognize my CD-ROM drive. It's a Compaq Armada 1580DMT Notebook (laptop). Have tried just about any combo of command lines possible and noting. I get a message that ATAPI CD-ROM not found. The driver [cpqltecd.sys] was downloaded, a boot diskette was created, etc. No luck. Any ideas on the autoexec.bat or config.sys lines, or am I on the wrong track?

Erik

The drive may be dead. Have you tried it in another machine? Secondly, you may want to install/reinstall bus mastering drivers based on your particular chipset. Check out the website www.bmdrivers.com for your unit's (Intel, AMD, VIA or whatever)drivers.

just a thought, are you running tweak ui ?
if so, be sure your cd rom drive is checked off so win 95 will see the cd rom

First the drive should be detected on start up. You should see it just as you see the hard drive. If it doesn't show and you know the jumpers are right you might have a bad drive.

If the drive showes up on start up. Find mscdex.exe and write downthe directory. It should be in the C:\windows|command directory. Write down the directory of the CDRom driver.

In your Config.sys edit this line.

Device=C:\aaaaaa\bbbb.bbb /D:mscd001

Where aaaa is the directory of the CD driver.
Where bbbb.bbb is the CDRom device driver.

In your autoexec.bat edit this line.

c:\windows\command\mscdex.exe /D:mscd001

This is if mscdex.exe is in the C:\windows\command directory otherwise change the location.

reboot and press F8 every couple of seconds till the menu comes up and select step by step confirmation. You can watch the drivers load and the results. If all goes well you'll get cd.

I have a generic CD driver install disk that works with everything I have come across. I could zip it and email it to you.

Good Luck Lee
