Question

Locked

No Desktop/Power Issue

By rsenvision ·
I have a Gateway 4010 that stopped powering up. That is to say, the fan comes on but the blue light on power switch does not, and the screen is black save for the "...signal cable error..." message. Also, when I plug the unit in, the fan automatically comes on without the power button being pushed. What's the deal?

Sounds like...

A dead motherboard to me.
However, have you tried reseating all cables (power, moniter, etc)?
Have you tried opening the case and reseating the video card, sound, RAM, etc?
If you want to spend time on it (instead of money off the bat), you could also try removing all additional cards from the motherboard to see if symptoms stay the same.
My initial guess would be a fried MB though.
Good luck.
