No desktop

Windows 98SE on a shared machine (with
other family members). I start up the machine,
it goes through what appears to be “the usual”
processes until the end: I hear the “done”
music, but no icons/desktop appear! One
time, I was able to getit to start up in “Safe”
mode, but again no icons/desktop.
