NO DIAL-UP

By pat903 ·
A client calls constantly that she can't dial up. After talking her through all possible problems her computer was tested at our bench. It connected with no problem. Is it possible that her phone wiring is at fault?

One way to check the wiring is to hook up a phone and see. rockyolson@charter.net

Or plug it in in-place of a working phone at the location. Use the existing phones cable, then try the "NEW" cable, I have seen "bad out of the box" equipment.

However I have also seen wiring changes made between the Jack and telephone, this would give the same indication as above.

Determining that she does not have call waiting box checked when she is having this problem.
Determining her process when she does use the dial-up will givwe you more options to look at,yet it is difficult to say that is is the phone wiring.
It may be that she did not have the phone on the hook at the time of use.
Suggest that she check her wall plug to make sure that it is plugged in.

Make sure she is plugging it in the right jack. Also, a common problem is if she subscribes to voicemail from the phone company, such as CallNotes, she may have messages on her phone so the modem doesn't pick up the dial tone right away. Have her check all messages or try putting in a few commas before the phone number.

I deal with remote users every day. If the dialup works in the lab on a known good line and does not work at the users' site, I have the user dial on a known good ANALOG line - fax, another modem line, etc. Digital phone systems are a no go. Also - the dialup config may need a "9" before the number to dial out, or it may not (which you probably already know). However, users who know enough to get themselves in trouble tend to play around with dialup configs. If all looks & tests well inhouse, you will have to fight with SNET to test and correct the line. Good luck with THEM.
