no internet connection

Actually this is very possible for a number of reasons. The most likely is that a firewall or router (etc) is blocking traffic on port 80. This is the port for HTML traffic but would not affect mail which uses port 25 (smtp), port 110 (pop3) etc. Ifthey tell you its impossible they are either lying or clueless...as I could set up that situation (mail no web) many different ways...a simple access list on a cisco router being the easiest.

Now, to resolve what your issue is, I'd need to know more information about your setup. Can you ping by IP addresses? By DNS? How are your connecting to the internet? What error message do you get when you try to go to an internet site? Are you using a firewall? A router? Proxy? ICS/NAT?

Please offer all the details you can and I'll be glad to assist. It is most likely this is a configuration issue on your end...but if the level 1 tech support guy at your ISP tries to hand you a line like that again, tell him you need to have your call escalated. That's not only possible...it's fairly common (a company that allows employees to use e-mail but not browse the web for example).

If you can send and receive email then you are getting connected to the Internet. The issue seems to be that you cannot load a web page in your browser. You can prove this by pinging a server on the Internet first by name and then by IP address. If you get a reply by IP but not by name then the problem is DNS name resolution. Make sure that you have correct DNS servers entered in the properties of your network connection or your dial-up connection whichever is appropriate. For a quick testyou might try this. Open your browser and in the address bar type: http://216.189.22.40 This is the home page of a midwestern ISP. If this page loads but others will not then you are experiencing name resolution issues. Ask your local ISP for their DNS server IP's and specify them in the correct network connection.

This does sound like a DNS issue, but there may be another answer.

You may want to check to see if the browser is set to use a proxy server. If this method is selected, then it may not allow you to browse the internet and e-mail would be unaffected.

If this option is selected, just unselect it and restart the browser it should still work.

Good Luck. You have one more movie left :)
