No login prompt

By Abrar Hazarika ·
I have a machine running Win 98 and it runs smoothly. But twice it happened. The enter network password screen does not show, instead the windows logon screen comes up. We are having a NT network with 1 PDC. the first time after 2 days it came back automatically but this time i am in trouble as after 2 days it hasnt come back. I tried registry settings HKey/localmachine/network/logon to default.

Any help please..

Just a thought - is the network connection 100%? Usually for 95/98 the lack of a network login (either NT or Novell) and the appearance of the Windows login is a sign that the PC cannot see the server. Usually because a user has not seen the network cable on the floor rather than plugged into the UTP outlet on the wall!

In any event I would be double-checking the network connections, from PC via cable to patch panel to hub/switch. I would also, by using either a known good PC or laptop, test the outlet. Also just removing and re-seating the flylead (from PC to wall outlet) may be enough.

Of course, if you're using coax or token-ring things are a bit different.

Give it a try, anyway.

LOL

What you described ? it looks to be problem with your network. When network isn?t active ? you have only windows logon screen (check lights on your network card ? no network ? no lights). Check network card (it may be intermittent problem), cables, connectors, hubs/switches. Try to use a different network point/socket.

I agree with the answers above, after you check one those answers, also make sure that you have a new version of a virus scan software loaded.. like McAfee Virus Scan. I you have a virus scan software loaded the make sure and update to the latest DAT file and re-run scan for viruses. I a ver simular problem once before and this was the solution. Hope this helps. But I need to make sure that you inderstand that 8 out of 10 times it is in the network or hardware itself.
