No “midi”sound from Media Player 7.1

How do I get Media Player7.1 to play sound with Midi files on Windows98SE. I have reinstalled the program several times and checked the PCI sound card. Other sounds are OK – e.g CDs etc. The Format types show midi files ticked in the list. I have followed Microsoft’s KB advice and the Registry settings are for “audio/midi”.
