A bit more information wouldn’t go astray here.

Do you have on board sound?

      The make/Model of the M’Board/Computer.

Is this a new computer or an old computer with a new problem.

But a general answer goes like this.

First open the Device Manager and see if the Sound Card is actually installed and if it is that there are no Conflicts with its installation. This works for both on board and plug in Sound Cards.

If you have on board sound you’ll need to make sure that this is enabled in BIOS and the option may require something else to be enabled so that you can access the sound controls.

If you have a plug in Daughter Card you can always go the the Device Manager and update the drivers by right clicking on the Sound Card and choosing Update Drivers. You can also visit the sound card makers Web Site and download the latest Drivers for that sound card and also check the compatibility with your OS as it’s possible that the sound card isn’t supported by the OS you are using.

If you download the newest drivers then go to the Device Manager and chose the Update Drivers and point the Wizard to the downloaded files for the correct drivers to be installed. Of course if these are zipped files you’ll need to unzip them first.

If this is a new problem on a previously working computer it’s possible that the Sound Drivers where not Digitally Singed to work with XP and the last round of MS Patches broke the sound drivers.

You’ll need to provide a bit more information for a better answer.

i see a couple of things here.
First I would think Windows Xp has support for just about every board using a AMD Sempron 3000. SO the I don’t think it’s an incompatible driver or outdated because of old hardware. Try using belarc from here
      http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
It iwl tell you what is on the pc and what drivers you have as well.
The second thing I saw was you mentioned greyed out icons in device manager. Those are non used drivers that have been previously installed. Try to disable all those grey icons then reboot and see if the Windows XP detects the soundcard then.

both of you were right with the amount of information available to yous, the problem was solved by using belarc and getting the mboard maker and number and downloading the sound driver for that particular one, thanks a mil
