no mouse or keyboard on boot

By mkfME ·
I ran Windows update for the latest critical updates on an NT4 SP-6 PC and when I reboot the mouse and keyboard don't work. There's an error message saying a driver or service failed to start, examine the Event Log, but of course I can't since there's no way to proceed. The keyboard works in setup. How can I get the mouse and kb working again without reinstalling NT?

Thanks

Review this Q article. Are you using a IntelliMouse or a standard PS/2?
