no network browsing allowed

By bradsolcom ·
I am unable to look at computers in the "My Network Places" on my WIN 2000 Pro machine. Our Windows 2000 Server seems to be fine as other clients can see things in the network neighborhood fine and also other WIN 2000 Pro machines seem to be fine. On my machine I also cannot issue a "net view" from a command prompt. I get the following error:
Microsoft Windows 2000 [Version 5.00.2195]
(C) Copyright 1985-1999 Microsoft Corp.

c>net view
System error 6118 has occurred.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available

anybody have a clue as to what I messed up on my computer and more importantly how I can fix it? Thanks

no network browsing allowed

Not heard about on on 2000 but on 98 - maybe this is a similar problem.

This behavior occurs because Windows 98 incorporates an update to the server component (Vserver.vxd) that is also available as a hotfix for Windows 95. This update addresses handling of null-session connections in a user-level security environment. When connecting to a Windows 98/95 Browse Master, the redirector always uses a null session; the Browse Master generates an Error 5 (Access Denied) if there is already an authenticated NetBIOS session open. If the browse master is a Windows NT-based computer, this does not occur, because the redirector issues the request on the existing, authenticated session.
A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but it has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. For details on obtaining the hotfix, refer to the Knowledge Base article Cannot Browse Network Neighborhood if PDC Is on Separate Subnet (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/support/kb.asp?ID=238853).
The article also contains several workarounds

I am not sure if this answered your question, i only encountered that error in 98.
